YUKON MAN KILLED IN GUNFIRE EXCHANGE WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT

Edition: Sunday, May 13, 2012

A Yukon man was killed Saturday after he exchanged gunfire with law enforcement.

Glen Wayne Kyle, 51, died shortly after 10 p.m. at OU Medical Center, where he was taken after the incident, Canadian County Sheriff Randall Edwards said Sunday. Kyle was shot by sheriff's deputy Paul Reynolds and El Reno police officer Jarad Loggins near Cemetery Road and Wilshire, Edwards said.

The incident began shortly after 8 p.m. when sheriff's office dispatchers received a call from a person who said the vehicle in which she was riding had been shot at by a man in a small blue hatchback. Reynolds responded to the call.

“About 8:25, Paul called into dispatch and said he had been in a chase with the suspect,” Edwards said. “We were told they were driving down the road, the suspect allegedly followed them, had his pistol out the window.

“They were able to take several turns and elude the suspect,” Edwards said.

After Kyle stopped his car, Edwards said the Yukon man fired four shots at Reynolds. The deputy fired back and struck Kyle twice in the chest. Loggins, who had responded also, fired several times, hitting Kyle in the leg. Neither officer was injured, Edwards said.

Agents from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting, Edwards said. El Reno Police Chief Ken Brown confirmed Monday agents were working on the case. Both officers were placed on paid leave pending internal investigations, Edwards and Brown said.

“That's the standard procedure in an incident like this,” Brown said.

Kyle had an “extensive” criminal record, Edwards said. According to the Oklahoma Supreme Court Network, the Yukon man had several misdemeanor and five felony convictions, including a 1994 charge of possession of a firearm. Most of the other convictions involved driving under the influence.

Jessica Brown, OSBI public information officer, said via text message Tuesday the case is under investigation.

Edwards said the effects of the incident will be long-lasting.
“Regardless of his actions, Mr. Kyle's family has suffered a loss,” Edwards said. “We also have two members of our law enforcement family who have been involved in a shooting, and that is never an easy thing, no matter the circumstances.”
